Why does my kid do ______?
Why won’t my kid ______?
Why doesn’t my kid seem as ______ as others their age?
Have you spent a lot of time pondering one or more of these questions? Are you stumped about some aspect of your child’s personality or behavior, and just can’t seem to communicate with them about it?
Much of the time, issues between parents and children are sparked by inherent differences in world view. Assuming your point of view is the one your child should take, or naturally would take — that’s the real parent trap. When we operate under the assumption (even unconsciously) that our child’s inner world resembles our own, it makes us quick to project the needs and preoccupations of our own personality onto our kids. It’s a very natural trap to fall into: thinking your children are just like you! This workshop will give you insights into your child’s perspective on the world to help you communicate more effectively and better understand the motivations behind those confusing behaviors.
World view differences often create the illusion of defiance or opposition where there actually is none. They can make you think your child is choosing not to listen to you, when what’s potentially going on is a palpable personality difference! Unacknowledged, mismatched value sets can keep all parties convinced that they are on opposing teams – when really they’re on the same team, but with opposing perceptions of how to play the game.
The Enneagram can act as your window into your child’s worldview—and help you stop running into that same old wall of trying to get them to do it like you.
It’s a very human thing to see differences between us and our children as “the child being the problem.” But differences between you and your child are just that—differences. Not problems! While a “problem” would need “solving,” differences in point of view require something else — acknowledgement and consideration.
This class spells out the inner motivations that your child may not be able to articulate, in order to help you acknowledge/consider their worldview with greater nuance. Another way to say it: the Enneagram of Personality can help fill in the blanks that your child can’t or won’t fill in for you.
For this workshop, we want you to bring the perpetual issue(s) you have with your kids, and get Enneagram insights that can help flip the script. It’s possible to break free from the self-reinforcing pattern. You, as the parent, loosening your personality structure can go a long way in breaking up the gridlock of worldview differences between yourself and your child.
According to the interests of the group, we’ll explore the following topics:
The strengths, motivations, and challenges of your type as well as your child’s (potential) type
Type-specific issues that may be influencing you as a parent
How the Enneagram can enrich your relationships with your children
How type differences may be affecting the dynamic between you and your kids
Dynamics between yourself and your own parent(s)
Current struggles and issues in your parent-child relationship (if you choose to share them with us!)
